7 Indoor and Outdoor Activities to Keep Your Kids Active at Home

The CDC recommends preschoolers get 180 minutes of physical activity a day and older kids get 60 minutes of physical activity a day. With more time at home, it’s hard to keep finding new activities that the kids will enjoy. Kids naturally desire to be active but it can be hard to find an activity that will keep them active and entertained because as we know, kids will not do something they do not enjoy.

Check out our suggestions to keep your kids active and safe during these times of social distancing. There are a variety of family-friendly activities for your kids that are indoors and/or outdoors that will keep your kids entertained, active, and playing the day away. These suggestions cover a wide range of kids ages, so make your best judgment.

1. Activity Stations

In your house or around the backyard, you can set up different activity stations and have your kids rotate around and do each designated activity for a designated amount of time. You can have a jumping jack station, a jump rope station, dance party station – really anything that is simple, and keeps your kids moving. Don’t forget to include breaks.

2. Scavenger Hunt

This activity can be done indoors, outdoors, or even a mix of both! Just create a list of items around the house or in the backyard that takes some effort to find. If you have more than one kid, they can split up into teams and/or make it a competition.

3. Inflatable Sports Games

We have a wide variety of inflatable sports games including football, soccer, baseball, basketball, a Velcro wall, and more! Our inflatables are always thoroughly cleaned and sanitized before and after each use, and we offer no-contact delivery and set up. Your fun in the sun is just a call or click away.

4. Animal Walk

This fun activity encourages your child to walk like an animal – which animal? Any animal they would like. They can hop like a frog, waddle like a penguin, gallop like a horse, walk like a crab – just have fun with it! This activity can be done indoors or outdoors.

5. Balloon Volleyball

You can tie a rope between two chairs and keep hitting the balloon back and forth above your “net”. You can also simply try to see how long y’all can keep the balloon in the air before it hits the ground. It can be kept casual or y’all can keep score if your kids are competitive. Do it in the backyard on a nice, windless day or make space in the house.

6. Plant a Garden

Planting a garden gets your child physically active and in the sun, and it gives them a sense of accomplishment and responsibility. It doesn’t have to be an extravagant botanical garden;it can be as simple as a row of sunflowers or carrots. Not sure where to start? Check out this Gardening With Kids guide to get helpful guidance, tips, and check out the best crops for kids.

7. Freeze Dance

This activity lets you and your kids break out your best dance moves and favorite tunes! Do a freestyle dance, or switch it up and pick different styles. Either way, they’ll be entertained and moving.
